To see one Ferrari Daytona SP3 in the metal is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many, but to see three is almost miraculous. Only 599 will ever be built, with each inspired by a period of unrivaled technical innovation in the 1960s, and the beautiful racing machines such as the 330P3/4, 330P4 and 412P which defined it.
At the 1967 Daytona 24 Hour race, Ferrari V12 sports prototypes swept to victory, taking first, second and third place – a glorious performance befitting what many aficionados consider the golden era of closed wheel racing. It’s a fitting milestone from which to draw inspiration for the latest release in Ferrari’s exclusive Icona collection, of which the SP3 forms a part.
Crafted from carbon fibre composite, the Daytona SP3’s breathtaking design is a radical reinterpretation of the timeless styling of those race-winning cars. Close the dihedral ‘butterfly’ doors, settle into the bucket seat, and you become as one with the minimalist, competition-inspired cockpit. Fasten the four-point Sabelt racing harness, look at the 10,000rpm redline on the tacho, press the start button, and the mid-rear-mounted, 6.5-litre V12 roars into life. Developing an astonishing 850PS at 9,500rpm, it can launch the car from 0-62mph in just 2.85s, and on to an incredible 211mph maximum speed.
It’s easy to understand why every Daytona SP3 is sold. Which makes it all the more remarkable that H.R. Owen is currently maintaining three.
