There is no greater driving experience than taking a Ferrari
out on the open road, and there’s no better place to do it than on the serene
roads of Spain and Portugal. We were thrilled to return for our seventh annual
tour, where 22 couples embarked on an unforgettable journey across the Iberian
landscape.
The tour began in the Asturias region, one of Spain’s hidden
gems. Located on the northern coast along the Bay of Biscay, Asturias is
renowned not only for its stunning rolling hills but also for its exceptional
cuisine. The first stop was Puebloastur, an intimate 30-room hotel perched on
the edge of a tiny hamlet, offering breathtaking views of the nearby Picos
mountains. Guests were greeted by a massive Salvador Dali sculpture at the
entrance and a Picasso in the reception, just a glimpse of the remarkable
artwork scattered throughout the hotel.
The first day of driving led the group on a memorable route
south through the Picos mountains. The Picos de Europa National Park, filled
with oak and beech groves, gets its name from the striking rock formations that
dominate the landscape. The park is also home to two of Spain's most iconic
animals: the brown bear and the Iberian wolf. After an exhilarating day on the
road, the group arrived at the majestic Hotel Abadia Retuerta for the second
day. This meticulously restored 12th-century Roman abbey, nestled in a 700-acre
wine estate in the Duero Valley, produces some of Spain's finest wines,
including Ribera del Duero.
On the third day, guests enjoyed a leisurely three-hour
morning loop around the area before retreating to the pool and spa for some
much-needed relaxation. The fourth day's route took the group westward, through
the vast open farmlands of the Castile y León region, following the Duero River
before crossing into Portugal after lunch. The terrain became more rugged and
the roads twistier, offering a perfect contrast to the morning's drive.
The Douro Valley, characterized by steep, chalky terraces
where vineyards have thrived since Roman times, was the next destination. The
group stayed at the Ventozelo Quinta, a unique and tranquil hotel perched high
above the river, offering stunning views that captured the essence of the Douro
Valley. The hotel, simple yet effortlessly stylish, had rooms scattered among
the vineyards. Being in the heart of port wine country, guests had the
opportunity to sample the local world-class produce that evening.
The final day of driving took the Ferraristi further west,
ascending into the hills of the Douro Valley through pine forests and
plantations of olive and almond trees. Like the previous days in Spain, this
leg of the journey allowed participants to explore roads and regions that are
often overlooked, at a time of year when the landscapes are at their most
beautiful.
The tour concluded in the ancient city of Porto, at the Rebello Hotel on the south bank of the Douro. The trip was rounded off perfectly with final drinks and dinner on a riverside terrace, offering spectacular views of the river and the city beyond.
